Strand（（使）擱淺）

11月底，在澳大利亞塔斯馬尼亞州的國(guó)王島，大批巨頭鯨和瓶鼻鯨擱淺海灘。盡管救援人員幫助不少困在海灘上的鯨魚(yú)重返大海，還是有80多頭鯨魚(yú)在烈日下無(wú)奈死去。新華社報(bào)道如下：Up to 80 pilot whales and bottle nose dolphins died after a mass stranding on King Island off Tasmania, Australia.

The number of dead mammals is lower than that in earlier reports which said at least 100 died after they were first noticed stranded Sunday afternoon.

Rescuers on King Island have successfully herded a large pod of whales and dolphins out to sea, Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) radio reported Monday.

Strand有“沙灘、海濱”的含義，作動(dòng)詞表示“（使）擱淺、陷入困境”，例如：The convoy was stranded in the desert.（使團(tuán)在沙漠中陷入了困境。）I was stranded in the strange town without money or friends.（我被擱淺在這個(gè)陌生的城市，沒(méi)有錢也沒(méi)有朋友。）

鯨類尤其是巨頭鯨集體擱淺的現(xiàn)象并不少見(jiàn)，甚至還有同一鯨群在幾天內(nèi)連續(xù)擱淺的情況，但其原因卻始終令人費(fèi)解。據(jù)科學(xué)家推測(cè)，由于鯨魚(yú)為群體性很強(qiáng)的海洋動(dòng)物，且活動(dòng)范圍靠近海岸，因此有兩種可能：一是領(lǐng)頭的鯨生病，沖向了海灘，其它的鯨也習(xí)慣性地跟隨頭鯨向前沖；二是鯨群在追逐獵物誤入淺灘。當(dāng)一條或幾條鯨魚(yú)擱淺時(shí)，其他鯨魚(yú)就會(huì)步其后塵或者試圖前往營(yíng)救，結(jié)果造成大批鯨魚(yú)同時(shí)擱淺在同一片海灘。
