杰羅姆·大衛(wèi)·塞林格一九一九年生于美國(guó)紐約城，父親是做奶酪和火腿進(jìn)口生意的猶太商人，家境相當(dāng)富裕。塞林格十五歲的時(shí)候，被父母送到賓夕法尼亞州一個(gè)軍事學(xué)校里住讀，據(jù)說《麥田里的守望者》中關(guān)于寄宿學(xué)校的描寫，很大部分是以那所學(xué)校為背景的。一九三六年，塞林格在軍事學(xué)校畢業(yè)，取得了他畢生唯一的一張文憑。
從一九四零年在《小說》雜志上發(fā)表他的頭一個(gè)短篇小說起，到一九五一年出版他的長(zhǎng)篇小說《麥田里的守望者》止，在十余年中他共發(fā)表了二十多個(gè)短篇，有些短篇還在《老爺》、《紐約人》等著名刊物上發(fā)表，使他在文學(xué)界有了一點(diǎn)點(diǎn)名氣。而《麥田里的守望者》則使他一舉成名。主人公霍爾頓是當(dāng)代美國(guó)文學(xué)中最早出現(xiàn)的反英雄形象，這一形象尤其得到青少年的普遍認(rèn)同。一時(shí)間，就像模仿少年維特一樣，模仿霍爾頓的言語(yǔ)行動(dòng)和穿著，成了當(dāng)時(shí)的一種時(shí)尚。此后他隱居到鄉(xiāng)下，特地為自己造了一個(gè)只有一扇天窗的水泥斗室作書房，每天早晨八點(diǎn)半就帶了飯盒入內(nèi)寫作，直到下午五點(diǎn)半才出來(lái)，家里任何人都不準(zhǔn)進(jìn)去打擾他;如有要事，只能用電話聯(lián)系。他寫作的過程據(jù)說還十分艱苦，從《麥田里的守望者》出版后，他寫作的進(jìn)度越來(lái)越慢，十年只出版三個(gè)中篇和一個(gè)短篇，后來(lái)甚至不再發(fā)表作品。偶爾有幸見過他的人透露說，他臉上已“顯出衰老的痕跡”。他業(yè)已完成的作品據(jù)說數(shù)量也很可觀，只是他不肯拿出來(lái)發(fā)表。不少出版家都在打他的主意，甚至在計(jì)劃如何等他死后去取得他全部著作的出版權(quán)，但至今除本書外，作者只出版過一個(gè)短篇集《九故事》(1953)和兩個(gè)中篇集《弗蘭尼與卓�！�(1961)及《木匠們，把屋梁升高;西摩;一個(gè)介紹》(1963)。
塞林格在歐洲期間曾經(jīng)與一個(gè)女醫(yī)生結(jié)婚，但不久便離異。1953年他與一個(gè)叫克萊爾·道格拉斯(Claire Douglas)的女學(xué)生相識(shí)，兩人后來(lái)在1955年結(jié)婚，但是后來(lái)又離婚。1972年塞格林在一本雜志上看到一個(gè)名叫喬伊斯·梅納德(Joyce Maynard)的耶魯大學(xué)女學(xué)生的文章和照片，立即被她吸引，兩人開始通信。兩人的關(guān)系在十個(gè)月后破裂。
1999年，塞林格在34年沒有發(fā)表任何作品后終于發(fā)表了新的長(zhǎng)篇小說《哈普沃茲16，1924》�！豆瘴制�16，1924》最早是以短篇的形式出現(xiàn)在1965年的《紐約時(shí)報(bào)》上。塞林格將這部作品授權(quán)一個(gè)小出版公司，但是到現(xiàn)在他的作品都還沒有出版。
